5 Advantages of Residential Vinyl Siding

Have you thought about having vinyl siding installed at your home? There are numerous advantages to installing vinyl over standard wood siding. Here are a few reasons you should consider choosing vinyl:

1)   Energy Effecient

If you are concerned with high utility bills, start by making sure your home is energy efficient. When looking at building materials, you want them to have a high R-value. For instance, brick has a value of around .44 and wood siding values come in at .81. However, insulated vinyl siding has R-values of 3.0-40. This is an incredible improvement and will be helpful for energy savings at your home.

2)   UV Protection


Did you know that some vinyl siding has sunscreen in it? Titanium dioxide is regularly used in sunscreen. It works by reflecting UV radiation away from you. You can now find siding that contains this same UV protection directly in the product. The sun’s UV rays are reflected away reducing solar heat build-up from your home and preventing damage. This also keeps the color of your siding from fading.


3)   Weather Resistant

You can identify hail damage without getting on your roof. Take a look at your gutters, window sills, screens, air conditioning condenser, or your siding. If you see dents in these areas, more than likely your shingles are not going to be in good shape.

A Closer Look

One way to look for damage on your roof without climbing a ladder is by using a pair of binoculars. Yes, binoculars! From the ground, you’ll want to look closely for damage to your vents, flashing and chimney hood. If you see dings, it’s time to call a qualified roof inspector to climb up there and take a look. And that’s what we’re here for!

Damage to metal, tile, or wood shingles will be very apparent. The metal shingle will dent, tile will crack, and wood will split. However, with asphalt shingles, it’s not always easy to spot hail damage if you’re not accustomed to looking for it. Asphalt shingles may show areas of missing granules. While it may not look major, over time this can lead to water leaks in the compromised shingle.

Oklahoma’s Extreme Weather: Saving with Replacement Windows

One thing Oklahoma is well known for is its weather. The famous quote by Will Rogers “if you don’t like the weather in Oklahoma, wait a minute and it’ll change” is true for this state of ours. From extreme cold to extreme heat, we have it all. But if you don’t have the right windows, you may be impacted by these temperature swings indoors as well as outdoors.

Crazy Oklahoma Weather


January is the coldest month of the year in Oklahoma. On average, the temperature is 27°F, but extremes do happen. The coldest temperature ever recorded in Oklahoma happened in early February of 2011. On this date, the temperature in the town of Nowata dropped to -31°F!

But we don’t deal with just extreme cold. By the time July rolls around, the outdoors starts to feel like an oven. The average daily temperature in July reaches 93°F, but heat waves can make that seem cool. In the summer of 2011, the statewide average high temperature was 100.5 °F.

So, it’s been established that our winters can be unusually cold and our summers uncomfortably hot. However, we also sometimes experience these extremes in the same week. During one week in 2011, Nowata went from a record -31°F to a high of 79°F. That’s a temperature change of 110 degrees! In a week! Understanding the weather we deal with here, don’t you want windows that can work efficiently?

Energy-efficient windows work in a few different ways. First off, vinyl frames don’t conduct heat like aluminum framed windows. This factor keeps your windows cooler in the summer and keeps heat in during the winter. New windows are also double or triple-paned, which provides high insulation than the older single pane versions. Plus, a dense, inert gas can be found between the glass panes, which reduces the amount of air that passes through them.

ROOFING CONTRACTORS REGISTRATION ACT OF OKLAHOMA

According to a new Oklahoma law, Roofing Contractors are now required to be registered by the state in order to do business in Oklahoma.

We are proud to announce that Parker Brothers Roofing is now registered with the State of Oklahoma Constructions Industries Board and our Oklahoma Registration License Number is #80000013.

Effective January 01, 2011, the state of Oklahoma now requires all roofing contractors to register with the Oklahoma Construction Industries Board. The law is an effort to protect homeowners from unqualified and unscrupulous roofing companies.

It is listed as Sections 1151 Title 59 known as the “Roofing Contractors Registration Act”. Contractors will have tougher regulations to maintain.

The Contraction Industries Board will publicly maintain a registry of qualified roofing contractors containing all legally registered roofing contractors. It will keep records and information of all individual and company owned roofing contractors and is available to the public

ICE DAM REMOVAL TIPS

Ice dam removal must be considered a vital maintenance procedure for a homeowner. An ice dam is a barrier of solid ice that forms in winter above the roof soffit over the eaves, the area between the vertical wall of a home and the edge of the roof. When snow melts above the ice dam, the water is trapped and may seep back into the walls of the house, causing damage to insulation, ceilings, and walls. In extreme cases, the water may actually flood through into the interior of the home, soaking furniture, carpet, bookshelves, and whatever else may be caught under the torrent.

There are two elements required for the formation of an ice dam: heavy snowfall and improper attic ventilation. If there are warm areas of the attic that cause snow to melt high up on the roof, the water seeps down and freezes at the soffit. Gutters may add to the problem by trapping ice or frozen debris.

The first step in ice dam removal is prevention. An attic that is properly insulated and ventilated will forestall the formation of ice dams. The rule of thumb is to provide one square foot of vent for every one hundred fifty square feet of attic floor area. Most attics have louvered or screened vents, each about a foot-and-a-half square at each of the vertical ends of the attic. If these vents are too small for the attic floor area, the solution is to install either larger vents or a thermostatically-controlled vent fan inside each vent.

The next step in ice dam removal is to remove the snow on the roof before the snow can melt and form an ice dam. You can do it yourself or hire a professional. Be aware that removing snow from a roof can be risky. Use a ladder and never ever walk on a roof covered with snow. Stand as high as safely possible on a ladder and use a push broom or snow rake to pull the snow down the roof slope — never pull snow across the roof slope.

If an ice dam has already formed upon the roof edge, remove the snow above the dam first. Make sure the ladder is not positioned directly below the section of the ice dam you will be working on. Pick low points in the ice dam and chip away at the ice with a hammer and chisel to form channels for water. Be careful when the tip of the chisel gets near the roof covering.

When attempting an ice dam removal, do not try to remove all the ice in the dam off the roof. You may be caught in an avalanche of ice and snow if you do.
